Blogosphere Abuzz about JD Supra Launch

The launch of JD Supra is the talk of the bloggers everywhere.  You owe it to yourself to visit the site where a lawyer can post a court filing, opinion or article, for free, that links to a profile of the lawyer -- also free -- where clients, prospects and lawyers can search the database -- also for free.

Among the bloggers to comment about JD Supra so far are:

MetaNotes - New On-line Service for Taking Notes

MetaNotes is a free note system. Think of if as sticky notes meets on-line notebook meets social web-sites. They just won the Web Award in the Experimental category at the South By Southwest Interactive festival.

You can use MetaNotes to track topics, compose and brainstorm, collaborate and converse. It looks like sticky notes on a long scrolling sheet of graph paper.

Icons on the top right of the screen let you access other web services: Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, and Photobucket, for example. (click thumbnail for bigger image)

MetaNotes uses wiki-style mark-up to format the contents of your notes. E.g., asterisks are used before text to create bulleted lists.

Some of the things you can do with MetaNotes:

  • Take notes during a talk
  • Explore the spaces of other people
  • Collect YouTube videos
  • Connect with other uses in real-time
  • Join a circle to talk about stuff
  • Publish abstract walls of content
  • Track any topic over a long time

Some things people are doing with MetaNotes:

  • Scrapbooks.
  • Brainstorming.
  • Research.
  • Collecting images.
  • Collecting video.
  • Saving craigslist postings for later.
  • Creating fan pages for bands, television shows, comedians.
  • Writing a business plan.
  • Writing team papers in school.
  • Running remote operations and team meetings.

MetaNotes - New On-line Service for Taking Notes

Confused By The "New Journalism"

Is consumer generated content the new direction in journalism? Will reporters have alter egos like Clark Kent and Superman. Which media will be the super hero: the blogger or the reporter?

Richard Edelman has an interesting post about the Financial Times' new model of including blogs written by their reporters. Now incorporating blogs into main stream media is not new or news; however, I must admit it still confuses me. Last September Geoff Livingston and I cross posted about a situation where a reporter, our opinion, crossed the line of good journalism.

So I dropped this comment on Richard's post. Note: the quote is taken from the post.

Richard -Based on this - "The reporters are given the option of putting out short versions of breaking news, then adding to the story based on talking to sources, or using Reuters wire copy for the initial break and then posting a story when fact-finding is completed." - does that mean that those blogs would be consider "opinion" (since no research has been conducted) while stories would be considered traditional journalism?

Do you think that if reporters write posts before, completing a story, that the story is likely to be more subjective than would be considered traditional reporting?

Do you view this as the new journalistic direction?

I wonder what Robert French's students and Amy Gahran and BL have to say.  What about you?

2,000 Expected for ABA Techshow

According to Conference Chair Tom Mighell, some 900 lawyers will descend on the Hilton Hotel on South Michigan Avenue in Chicago for ABA Techshow 2008.  When you add in exhibit hall vendors, faculty and vendors, the total is expected to go up to 2,000.

ABA Techshow is ideal for the 21st Century wired lawyer.  I'm here blogging about the conference and also writing a story for Law Technology News about how lawyers use social networking.

You can follow reports on the conference by:

  • Reading this blog, where I'll be reporting on several programs on Friday March 14 about marketing with technology.
  • Go to http://www.abanet.org/techshow/buzz/ and see photos from Techshow that have been posted on Flickr, follow updates from attendees or even check out some of the websites being talked about at the show.
  • Following a Twitter stream, with conference updates as well as personal messages from attendees. You need to open an account on Twitter (http://twitter.com), which is a service that asks the question, “What are you doing?” Techshow is using Twitter to update attendees on activities.  Twitter can be used to tell people that, you just heard or saw something really cool, there’s a raffle drawing happening in a few minutes, you’re looking for someone interested in a particular subject or an important session is about to start
  • Grab the RSS feed -- http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=OigKb_Tj3BGJA380n0artA&_render=rss -- and plug it into your news aggregator so you can see other blog posts about the conference.
  • You can share a website that's cool by using del.icio.us, a social bookmarking tool. We’re keeping all of the ABA TECHSHOW 2008 bookmarks in one place, and it’s really easy to join in.  Just read the tech Cheat Sheet at http://www.abanet.org/techshow/docs/2008/buzzcheat.pdf.

There's free wi-fi on the conference floor to blog, get on the Web and email about the 60 CLE sessions and 100 legal technology exhibitors.  More later.
